The Directors of Research have a long history, and our predecessor DREs actually started what would become the largest education research organization in North America. In 1915, eight founding members met at the NEA conference in Cincinnati to form the National Association of Directors of Educational Research.

This served as the foundation for the group later incorporated as the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the DRE focused group evolved into the Directors of Research and Evaluation, affiliated with AERA Division H.

The organization has been meeting annually in conjunction with the AERA meeting for decades.
